Chinatown Engagement Session

AIYANA & MARK

Locations:

  • First location: Chinatown in Los Angeles, CA

Chinatown engagement session photos:

I first heard from Aiyana and Mark a few months before their wedding was planned and it was a pleasure to meet them face-to-face at my studio in Downtown Long Beach. They wanted something really fresh and unique, and mentioned that they loved the color and vibrancy of Chinatown.

While Los Angeles’ original Chinatown emerged in the late 19th century, it was demolished to make way for Union Station, and this more modern Chinatown was developed during the 1930s in what is now Downtown Los Angeles. So we decided to combine a Chinatown engagement session with a few shots incorporating some of the architectural features and landmarks in and around Downtown Los Angeles.

Chinatown engagement session photos:

My wife Charlene and I met up with the couple in Chinatown and began exploring its colorful alleyways and distinctive features. I got creative with some silhouette portraits of the couple backed by a string of Chinese lanterns, as well as a reflective shot looking through one of the store fronts. I loved the spontaneity of this e-session and the energy that Aiyana and Mark brought to the e-session, even bringing along their own sword props for a staged fight!

Downtown Los Angeles engagement session photos:

After a whimsical portrait against a tree shadow projected on one of Chinatown’s walls, we headed over to the Dorothy Pavilion in Downtown Los Angeles to take advantage of its magnificent fountain. Aiyana and Mark both changed into green-hued outfits and playful danced and dipped in front of this iconic water feature. In keeping with the colorful theme of this e-session, we found a bright pink bench for the couple to embrace on, and I got creative with a portrait looking through a trash can of all things!

As the sun began to sink towards the horizon, we headed over to a bridge which looked back across the city skyline of Downtown Los Angeles. Aiyana and Mark embraced as the sky transformed behind them and I got a silhouette as it turned rich hues of color, together with a playful black and white shot of Aiyana pulling Mark’s tie. We also made use of an off-camera flash in a romantic nighttime couple portrait of the two of them to end the e-session.

It was such a pleasure spending the afternoon with this fun-loving couple during this Chinatown engagement session and I’m really looking forward to reconnecting with them for their wedding at the LA River Center and Gardens in late June.
